About

Welcome to the website of Clan McDouall of Freugh, an ancient and powerful clan of Galloway in southwest Scotland.

The clan traces its history as far back as 1445 when Gilbert McDouall married Katherine McGiligh (our earliest contemporary record), from which time our descendants are recorded in detail.

Before that there are clear connections with the Lords of Galloway including Fergus, the first Lord (1096 - 1161), and the earliest mention of all such 'Lairds', Dovall or Douall, Prince of Galloway known as the Black Alan, who is reputed to have slain Nothatus the Tyrant in 230 BC.

The McDoualls of Freugh have for centuries lived up to their battle cry 'Vincere Vel Mori', Victory or Death, having fought and died in many a famous battle including the Battle of the Standard in 1138, Flodden in 1513, Pinkie Cleugh in 1547 and Bothwell Bridge in 1680.

Our ancestors died for their beliefs as Covenanters, and stood their ground valiantly in pursuit of their motto 'Pro Deo Rege et Patria', For God, King and Country!

Note: Those with the last name McDouall may be descended from one of the two principal families, either of Freugh or Logan, both of which used that particular spelling. The use of McDowall, or variants thereof, are more likely to have descended from the Garthlands, although there are exceptions to this general rule. Read more in our history chapter.
